St Andrews Labour Councillor, Brian Thomson, has welcomed temporary measures – pending a permanent solution – to prevent motor vehicles accessing and parking in College Street.
Councillor Thomson said: “College Street is designated as a joint footpath and cycleway, with all motor vehicles prohibited from entering, apart from limited exemptions such as emergency vehicles, removal vans and vehicles associated with roadworks or building operations.
However, a bollard at the North Street end disappeared some time ago, and there is sufficient space at the Market Street end for vehicles to squeeze between a bollard and the Central Bar. The result was that the street was constantly full of parked vehicles, with pedestrians and cyclists forced to use a narrow strip down the east side of the street.
College Street is a fantastic space within the town centre, but its character was spoiled by it effectively becoming a car park and, with the need for physical distancing due to COVID-19, it further highlighted the unacceptable situation. I’ve been pursuing the matter for some time, and I’m pleased that Council transportation officers have recently committed to implementing appropriate permanent bollards or other measures and, in the meantime, have placed temporary barriers at both ends of the street.”
